How Does Kindle Unlimited Pay Authors? (2026 Guide)

10 min read · Updated October 2026

Kindle Unlimited is Amazon’s ebook subscription: readers pay a monthly fee and read as many books from the catalogue as they like. For authors, it changes how you are paid, from a royalty per sale to a share of a fund based on pages read. For some books it is the biggest source of income; for others it means giving up every other ebook store for little in return. This guide explains exactly how Kindle Unlimited pays, shows the maths with a worked example, covers the questions authors ask most, and helps you decide whether to enrol.

How do books get into Kindle Unlimited?

Your ebook joins Kindle Unlimited when you enrol it in KDP Select, an optional programme in your KDP dashboard. Enrolment runs in 90-day terms that renew automatically unless you switch renewal off.

The condition is exclusivity: while enrolled, the ebook cannot be sold or given away anywhere else, including Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play or your own website. Exclusivity applies only to the ebook edition. Your paperback, hardcover and audiobook can still be sold anywhere.

Enrolling also makes the book eligible for Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, and gives you access to promotional tools such as Kindle Countdown Deals and free promotion days. The full trade-offs are covered in our guide to whether KDP Select is worth it.

How are authors paid from Kindle Unlimited?

Instead of a royalty per sale, you are paid for the pages Kindle Unlimited readers actually read. Each month Amazon sets a global fund for KDP Select, and that fund is divided among all enrolled authors according to their share of the total pages read that month.

This means the payment per page changes every month, depending on the size of the fund and the total pages read across Kindle Unlimited. In recent years it has generally sat somewhere around half a cent per page, but it is not fixed and Amazon can change how it works. The rate for each month is published after that month ends.

Payment follows the usual KDP schedule: royalties for a month are typically paid roughly 60 days after the month closes. Your pages read appear in your KDP reports as KENP read, so you can watch the trend before the rate is known.

What is KENP and how are pages counted?

Pages are counted in Kindle Edition Normalized Pages, or KENP. Amazon calculates a normalised page count for your book based on its content and a standard layout, so a page means the same thing for every book regardless of font size or device settings.

Your book’s total, called the KENPC, is shown in your KDP bookshelf. A page is counted only the first time a reader reads it, so rereading does not earn twice. A reader who borrows your book but never opens it earns you nothing; one who reads every page earns you the full KENPC multiplied by that month’s rate.

Pages are counted from the furthest point a reader reaches, so skipping to the end is not rewarded either. Front matter and back matter count too, which is worth remembering: a long preview of your next book at the end can inflate your KENPC without adding anything a reader values. Keep it short and relevant.

How much can you earn from Kindle Unlimited?

A rough estimate per complete read is the KENPC multiplied by the monthly rate. A novel with a KENPC of 400 pages at about half a cent per page earns around $2 for every reader who finishes it. Compare that with a sale at $2.99 or above on the 70% royalty, which pays more than that per copy, and with a $4.99 sale, which pays roughly $3.50 before delivery costs.

So Kindle Unlimited is not automatically better or worse than selling. It depends on the ratio. If your readers are heavy borrowers and finish books, one borrower can be worth a fair share of a sale. If most of your readers would have bought at a higher price, enrolment may lower your income per reader.

Series change the picture. A reader who finishes book one and carries straight on through the rest earns you pages on every book, with no extra purchase decision at each step. That is why Kindle Unlimited works so well for long series with strong read-through. You can model this with the Series Read-Through Calculator.

Amazon also runs the KDP Select All-Stars bonus programme, which rewards top performers with extra payments. Rules, eligibility and amounts have changed over time, so check the current terms in your KDP dashboard rather than relying on a past figure.

What makes a book earn well in Kindle Unlimited?

Long, compulsively readable books in genres with heavy readers, such as romance, thrillers and fantasy series, tend to do best, because those readers read a lot and finish what they start. Short books and books readers abandon earn far less per borrow.

Page-turning structure matters more than length alone. A strong first chapter keeps borrowers from dropping the book early, and chapter endings that pull readers onward lift the pages read per borrow. A book padded to be longer but abandoned at 30% earns less than a tight book that is finished.

Be careful with tactics that look like shortcuts. Amazon has rules against page-stuffing, such as clickbait links to the end of a book or manipulating how pages are counted, and accounts can be penalised. Earn pages by writing something people want to keep reading.

Is Kindle Unlimited right for your book?

Kindle Unlimited suits fast-paced genre fiction and series, where readers binge many books a month and borrowing is a habit. In those genres, a large share of all reading happens in Kindle Unlimited, and leaving it can mean missing most of your readers.

It suits non-fiction, literary fiction and slower reads less well, and also authors who want income from many stores and from libraries. Publishing wide builds an audience that is not dependent on one retailer’s rules.

Because enrolment runs in 90-day terms, you can test it: enrol for one term, compare your income with what you earned before, and decide whether to renew or go wide. Track total income from all sources, not just pages read, and compare like with like over a few months before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Kindle Unlimited pay per page?

It varies each month because the fund is shared by pages read. In recent years it has generally been around half a cent per page, but it can change.

Do I have to be exclusive to Amazon for Kindle Unlimited?

Only the ebook. While it is enrolled in KDP Select it cannot be sold elsewhere, but print and audiobook editions can be sold anywhere.

What is the KENPC?

Your book’s Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count, the standard page total Amazon uses to pay Kindle Unlimited reads. You can see it in your KDP bookshelf.

Do I get paid if someone borrows my book but does not read it?

No. Kindle Unlimited pays for pages read, the first time each page is read, not for borrows.

Can I leave Kindle Unlimited?

Yes. Switch off automatic renewal and your book leaves KDP Select at the end of the current 90-day term, after which you can sell the ebook elsewhere.
